The actor who played Plutarch Heavensbee in 'The Hunger Games' movies died of a drug overdose while the final two films were still in production. Producer Nina Jacobson says some dialogue had to be rewritten for scenes that had yet to be filmed. Philip Seymour Hoffman's final on-screen performance was saved in the editing bay. The director of Part 1 and Part 2 of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay," Frances Lawrence, revealed that he was able to salvage Hoffman's parts in both films without resorting to CGI effects as previously reported by several outlets. "We finished the majority of his work, I think he might have had 8 to 10 days left on our schedule," Lawrence said in a roundtable released on the official "Hunger Games" site Thursday. "In most of those scenes, Phil didn't have any dialogue. We are going to put him into those scenes, but we're only using real footage. We're not creating anything digital or a robotic version of him." Hoffman's played Plutarch Heavensbee in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and the two-part "Hunger Games: Mockingjay" — a small but pivotal part. The production had been rocked by the abrupt death of the 46-year-old Hoffman, who was found dead Feb. 2 in his Greenwich Village apartment, reportedly with a needle sticking out of his arm. A coroner ruled the Academy Award winner succumbed to a drug overdose from a toxic mix of heroin, cocaine benzodiazepines and amphetamine. A source close to the production told The News at the time that Hoffman's scenes in "Mockingjay, Part 1," set for a Nov. 21, 2014, release, had already been filmed. But the actor still had scenes scheduled to shoot for "Mockingjay, Part 2," the final installment in the franchise based on Suzanne Collins' dystopian book series. "We had to rewrite the dialogue scenes that he had left and there's no question that shooting those scenes is painful without him," producer Nina Jacobson said in the just-released roundtable interview. "We might give a line of Plutarch's to Haymitch or Effie, but only in circumstances that we are able to do that without undermining the scene." ON A MOBILE DEVICE?
